The One among the Many
The Ishavasyopanishad mantras begin, by remebering God, with ‘Om’.
Ishavasyam idagam sarvam.
Following this, the Teacher declares, ‘This entire world is pervaded by the Lord’ (Ishavasyam idagam sarvam.). The world is already pervaded by God who is everywhere, but we do not see Him. We need to look at the world and see it as pervaded by God; if we are not able to do so, our sorrows will not end.
Thus, in the very first statement the Guru tells the shishya that your sorrow is not because of any action, person or the world, it is because of how you are looking at this world. The Upanishads say God is everywhere; see Him everywhere. However, we tend to see and focus our attention on corruption and the many other acts of wrong doing that take place around us, not on the fact that everything in this entire world is pervaded by the Lord alone.
Whatever is there in this world, however insignificant it may be (yat kincit), it is pervaded by the Lord. Intellectually, we may accept that God is everywhere, but we are not able to see Him in everything, especially in those whom we dislike. However, He is in all – as all. Look at the world with God-vision and your sorrows will end. Ishavasyam idagam sarvam.
Jagat Defined
This world, idam jagat, is pervaded by the Lord. What falls under this term ‘jagat’?
Whatever is known to us as ‘This’ is the world. Whatever becomes the object of our senses, mind and awareness, is defined as ‘jagat’ – the world. The very word ‘jagat’ itself opens up and indicates the nature of the world. That which appears and disappears, comes and goes; only, in between, it gives an illusion that it is steady – that is jagat.
A good illustration are the Mumbai local trains. A train arrives, stops at the station for a short time. Then in an instant, it picks up speed and is gone! The very nature of the world is that which comes and goes. Since the world is an object of consciousness, it is also inert and perishing.
The Substratum
When we do not have the vision of the one Lord alone pervading everywhere, then what we will see is multiplicity, diversity – the world of names and forms. We do not see the underlying Reality, its substratum, which pervades in and through the entire universe.
So look at the world as pervaded by the Lord. Know that there is only One Lord that pervades this world and have the vision of Oneness. When one sees only diverse names and forms and perceives them as different from oneself, then notions of ‘I and my’, ‘you and yours’, likes and dislikes arise. The moment we lose sight of the One and see only the many, we are caught up in the world of plurality. Greed, jealousy and other negative emotions arise to create strong likes and dislikes, resulting in divisions and conflicts.

Chinmaya Vijaya girls to Chinmaya Vibbooti
Hari Om!
Sharing a report and some photos of the recent visit of Chinmaya Vijaya girls to Chinmaya Vibbooti.
21 girls from Chinmaya Vijaya (girls’ orphanage in Kaza, near Vijaywada) aged 10-14 years old along with two caretakers and accompanied by Br Kushal Chaitanya, reached Chinmaya Vibhooti (the Vision Centre of Chinmaya Mission at Kolwan, near Pune) late on 9th May. The night sky opened up to receive them in a heavy shower of unexpected rain.
The next morning a bright sun welcomed them as they embarked on their 19-day stay. After a couple of days to settle in, they participated in a Bala Vihar camp by Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda, on the topic of values. From 12 to 15 May, they attended classes, activities and games, and participated in cultural performances and a prabhat pheri procession between Vibhooti’s two beautiful temples. The girls enjoyed the camp thoroughly and said they would love to repeat the experience!
From 17th to 21st May, the group spent time with Smt Pramodini Rao, director of Chinmaya Naada Bindu (CNB). She told them lots of stories and taught them lots of songs, and it was mutual love at first sight (and sound). They had evening spiritual class with Br Srivatsa Chaitanya and Br Narayana Chaitanya. In their spare time they also had a taste of Vedic Maths with Shri Rupesh from School of Vedic Maths – unplanned but thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening.
The last week of their stay at Chinmaya Vibhooti was spent learning dance with Smt Ramaa Bharadvaj, director of dance at CNB. She spent quality time with them, teaching them mudras and their names, expressions and much more. She choreographed a dance to a Telugu song, especially for them to perform at the CNB Summer Arts Intensive valedictory. The audience was enthralled and overjoyed by the performance, which was a display of their zest, coordination with each other, and tuning with Ramaaji.
The best part of the visit of the Chinmaya Vijaya girls to Chinmaya Vibhooti was the connection they formed with each one they interacted with. Be it management or staff or visitors who happened to be around, everyone enjoyed their company thoroughly. Their warm smiles and waves, their friendly banter, and their polite conduct will be remembered for a long time to come.

Chinmaya Mission Houston – 2016 Graduation Ceremony
HOUSTON. When summer begins its bright shine, the spirit of graduation manifests everywhere, from the ripening acts of nature to the maturing landmarks of academic endeavors. As secular education in schools culminates after another year of learning, a new generation of graduates step into the wider world of higher collegiate learning to begin another journey of academic discovery and achievement.
Keeping with that cycle of growth and maturation, when the fresh and eager Class of 2016 emerged ready to fly out into the portals of higher education, the happy and proud family of Chinmaya Prabha Houston gathered to celebrate, empower, and inspire its graduates through a significant Bala Vihar graduation ceremony on the morning of May 28, 2016.
The Bala Vihar Class of 2016 were thrice blessed on their graduation this year. First, their Bala Vihar studies that helped mold their spiritual and cultural personalities from kindergarten to 12th grade reached the graduating landmark to coincide with the memorable Chinmaya Centennial (1916-2016) year. Next, their graduation was celebrated in the presence of the auspicious Chinmaya Jyoti that invoked the very presence of the Master, Pujya Gurudeva Swami Chinmayananda himself. And, the graduates had the great fortune of three-fold blessings from the Acaryas Sri Gaurang and Smt.Darshana Nanavaty, their parents, and Bala Vihar teachers along with the wishes of an entire Chinmaya community.
The Graduation ceremony commenced with an ardent puja in Sri Saumyakasi Sivalaya conducted by the priest Sri Ganesh in the presence of the Acaryas. After that prayer, the bright graduates were led by their beloved Acharyas into the Chinmaya Smrit Hall after prostrations to Pujya Gurudev’s pratima. As they took their places in the hall after the Vedic chanting of Sri Ganeshji and the melodic wishes of “Om Mangalam,” it was a moment of pride and gratitude for all gathered there.
In Houston, Chinmaya Bala Vihar is the culmination of Pujya Gurudeva’s divine vision for every new generation and a mother’s love for her children at its best! Pujya Acarya Smt. Darshana Nanavaty has tirelessly spearheaded the Houston Chinmaya Bala Vihar with a team of dedicated Bala Vihar teachers since 1982. Many of graduating students of the Class of 2016 have benefited from their learning about Hinduism, Indian culture, and universal values from classes even from kindergarten upto 12th grade. Bala Vihar students draw inspiration from spiritual guidance and teachings every Sunday to strive for their best, forge beautiful friendships, and participate in further volunteering in the community. Parents receive immeasurable comfort and assurance that their children will be good citizens of this world and carry forth with them the ethical integrity and moral values.
Once the students were seated in Smrti Hall, the Graduation ceremony continued with Pujya Gurudeva’s Paduka Puja followed by the Convocation address from Taittiriya Upanisad by Acarya Sri Gaurang Nanavaty. Basing his discourse on the ancient revered Vedic text which imparts advice on the best tenets of ethical living, Gauranguncle reminded the new graduates with humor, love, and thoughtful fatherly affection that the centuries-old message of that ancient graduation was still the most relevant and surest means of Self-unfoldment and secular success. Using metaphors from many aspects of daily life, the Acarya emphasized how alert and consistent practice is important to fortify value-based achievement and how every graduate must exemplify the values of Sanatana Dharma in every aspect of higher learning and living. This inspiring discourse was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by both Acaryas after which every graduate came up on stage, lit his or her own light of new beginnings, bowed to the Acaryas and received a blessing memento which had Gurudev’s words inscribed: “Keep your mind where your hands are working,” to signify efficiency born of inspired concentration.
Concluding with the time-honored Vedic tradition, to show a mark of their utmost respect and deep gratitude for the spiritual education they received, the new graduates of 2016 offered Guru Dakshina to the Acaryas, making their first contribution to the Chinmaya Jeevan Darshan project of the future. As the new graduates lined up, looking resplendent in their traditional Indian clothes with their joyful smiles, in front of the assembled audience, the Bala Vihar Graduation Ceremony of 2016 concluded with the resonance of ‘Abhinandanam’ – the Chinmaya Graduation Song, the Chinmaya Pledge, and the Universal Peace Prayer – “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah.” For more information on Chinmaya Mission Houston and its activities visit www.chinmayahouston.org or Jay Deshmukh 832-541-0059 or Bharati Sutaria 281-933-0233

Interspersed with Guruji’s devotional naam-sankeertana, his uplifting discourses and thought provoking episodes from the TV serial Upanishad Ganga; this was truly an experience of a lifetime. It was a truly delightful and inspiring experience for everyone to watch.
During the course of Pujya Guruji’s visit, he also met and interacted with various groups namely the Balvihar sevikas, Study group members, Sevaks, Volunteers and members of CSC executive Committee.
An emotionally moving event was when Balvihar children performed “Pitra Puja” as a worship of their fathers.

His divine presence brought everyone closer, giving us an opportunity to meet every day and serve Pujya Gurudev’s Vision in a truly Yagna spirit. Students’ Day Celebrations at Chinmaya Mission Pittsburgh
On May 22nd 2016, Chinmaya Mission Pittsburgh (CMP) had their annual Balavihar Students’ Day celebrations. Acharya Vivekji, who is the visiting Acharya of CMP, graced this event with his presence. Ever since its inception in 2008, the CMP Balavihar community has grown significantly under the able guidance of Vivekji. There are now three centers in three different areas of Pittsburgh with forty-five teachers and about six hundred families in all.
The day started with the opening prayers followed by the screening of the Student’s Day movie: Mahabharata! Each class from all three centers, with kids ranging from preschoolers to students in high school, were cast in short plays depicting various episodes from the Mahabharata which were filmed several weeks ahead of the Students’ Day. The Balavihar teachers wrote the script, directed, and filmed the plays. The movie was recorded using green-screen technology. Using a computer software, the volunteers worked on the movie by adding special effects such as inserting a background to the videos, adding voice enhancements and appropriate music, and combined all of the recorded episodes, creating a three-hour long movie! Each and every play in the movie had an invaluable lesson to take away.
The graduating high school seniors were recognized during the event. The Youth-Seva related awards were given to students who volunteered their time during the school year for a higher purpose. This event paved the way for the entire Balavihar community to come together, connect with one another, and celebrate the power of Guru-Shishya Parampara on this memorable day!
